Deer Lagoon at Whidbey Island is an official Important Birding Area. However, otters also favor the lagoon areas on the island. I found three playing around near the trail entrance to the lagoon.
Otters are not too skittish around people — this one ventured into the nearby rushes to get a closer look — and appears a bit surprised, though I imagine I was more suprised than it was!
The morning was a bit overcast and I had the ISO on “auto” for this photo — which resulted in this case in a very high ISO so I had to do some post-processing to reduce noise a bit.
Why I Like It
Otters are cute (well, unless they are living under your house which I’ve seen) and playful and, while it’s not art photography, this was a good memory of finding some otters in the wild that got relatively close and I like the expression on this one peering out at me from the rushes.
